So little time

Where does it go, the time. During a Pandemic time goes fast and slow. Nothing is as usual – If your work is recognized as essential, you have likely never worked so hard. And if your work is non essential you have other worries. For both, life is surreal.

As we all reset our expectations and plans – we have the opportunity to give thought to all the news briefs we watch. For me, it’s not only the news briefs about how our people are living, or not. But how the natural world is responding to our lessened impact on the Earth. I not only directly witness these responses, but I imagine what it must seem like to the rest of the living things on the planet. Not imagining in an anthropomorphic way, but based on my previous observations and experiences in environments where wildlife exists. Knowing that the deer don’t move as freely during the day, and birds are more quiet when we are in their woods.

Are the deer and others moving more easily in the daytime? Is there less concern for the song the birds sing when we are not too close for their comfort? What about the wolves and grizzly that have begun to move around more in search of food?

What do the changes in animal behavior say about their perception and experience of our behavior in and near their habitat? What could it mean for all of us if  we considered these observable impacts on the other beings on the Earth – as a whole experience?

Knowledge equals Empowerment

  
Sometimes we need to learn things more than once in a lifetime. Of course some “lessons” we learn over and over again. In this instance, I am re-learning autocad. And it’s kind of like re-learning how to ride a bike with different gears. Even after twenty years not much in the mechanics of the program have changed. 

So watch out you youngsters, cuz I’ll be speeding by you soon. Just need to learn how to shift a few more gears! From concept to spec, I am gaining the power to tell the whole story. 

Knowledge is empowerment. A great lesson from Remote Studio.

Institutions of the industrial era are crumbling but our imaginations are as rich as ever. We see the changes everywhere as the new paradigm of impermanence gains presence and practice. Life is fleeting, moving, passing by, here and there and then gone. The Crumbling we are witnessing suggests that “the institution” is most defined by physical parameters . But it is clear from the definition of “institute” shown above that “to institute” is more about an idea than physical boundaries or constraints, and institution is more about the establishment of an idea or treatise than any set of built and physical conditions .

Our preconceptions lay within the parameters of commerce and industry when we imagine institution as something physical, rather than something that is real as an idea , while ephemeral in the physical world.

Such is the vision that launched Artemis Institute, which codifies an idea, an idea specifically bound to the relationship we experience and create between nature and culture.

From the idea to the reality, we gather together the institution into our imagination, blending the idea into a world view, expanding into a new sense of the world . All the while engaged in the idea, inhabiting a fleeting sense of place among meadows, a mountaintop , a cafe or sidewalk. All parts being a part of the community of life. Artemis Institute is simply an idea that is alive because people believe in it.

The Search for Beauty

Reading Leopold

I fell in love with the wetlands of Louisiana in part because I read Aldo Leopold, and in part because the grasses that wave against the blue sky of the Gulf remind me of the grasslands of the Great Plains of North America, which brings me back to the legacy of Aldo Leopold. I don’t use the word LOVE as a simple term, but as a description for that deep feeling we have when someone, thing, or experience moves our soul. That sense that we have when we believe we have found meaning in our world where so little existed before.

But this takes me a bit off-course, and the course I intend to take you on is the ground breaking trajectory of Aldo Leopold. Actually we will explore, his words, thoughts, and the legacy of Aldo Leopold.

As every Remote Studio begins, so will this one in the summer of 2015, with the reading of Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac, with Essays on Conservation from Round River. Even if you don’t realize it today, in a a few weeks you will. You will understand the great debt you owe Leopold for the places we call wilderness today, for the endangered species that are protected, for the idea that poetry can be found and experienced on the land, and then written about, and shared with all of us. That the fast paced day you spent online, driving in traffic, and answering texts, can be slowed down and valued relative to the place you find yourself: with the experience of sun, wind, scent and birdsong.

And if you wonder why we would be reading a book written by an activist (although he may not have called himself such) in 1949 , you only need to read the book to learn. The obviousness of this request will appear as you understand how necessary words written sixty-six years ago are in 2015.

Aldo Leopold’s book, the whole book, will be discussed at the end of the first week of Remote Studio, a week of hiking and making, with very little time for sitting still. To give yourself the opportunity to savor his words, thoughts, and to commit to your future, I recommend that you start reading the book before Remote Studio begins. And to take notes, and to write notes to yourself and underline passages you value in the book.Live in the book.  And perhaps someday, if you pay attention you will have a place you love, too.

From this place that Leopold provides we begin our journey with Remote Studio, and the understanding of why architects so desperately need to know the world as he saw it.

Mission . Practice. Journey.

On October 26 I wrote a post called “Beginning Practice” as a follow up to a small piece I wrote “Practicing” on September 26. Now comes the journey.

As I have been traveling to speak to students at universities these past few weeks I have been asking them a question Artemis Institute has been focused on since it’s first program in 1997. I ask them if they believe they have a specific journey in life. Almost all say “yes.” But the next question, ” do you know what that journey is?” Usually follows with their response of “no.” The “no” is the challenge for our future.

There is a big change of outlook occurring with this new generation of people who are of college age. No longer do they believe a degree at a university provides an unquestionable best trajectory for their lives, and certainly not a guarantee for happiness. Truths cannot be guaranteed by those guarding antiquated cultural models. The primary change I see ( as is evident by theses covers of current magazines) is that happiness and job is important, place is important to this generation. And journey is ultimately important. The journey is not just about the self, the journey for these folks includes interaction with community and environment. They want to make change happen. Change requires a clear mission, a practice for that mission, and commitment to take the journey.

The journey is the exploration of who and how we are in the world . There is no straight-line to the end game of success. That idealized trajectory is one of the biggest myths we have told ourselves since the Enlightenment. Interaction, cooperation, multiple considerations, multiple answers, and inclusion all lead us to a new form for being in the world beyond the myth.

Say “yes .” Take the journey.

a practice of making

What we know, we can practice. We know ways of being, we practice these. These practices add up to a life, lived. We learn, believe and live differently. We practice our differences, and if we practice diligently there is a unique presence that comes to live on the Earth for a while. Practice has success, failure, sharing, love, making and challenge all wrapped up in time. We transform as we practice, as we move through the world every day. These posts found under “PRACTICE” are shared thoughts about practicing, and moments of my practice.

Let us all be brave to find the best way for each of us to Practice, to create a life that is full of moments of who we are.

Desert Land next Stop

I have been in many places across this landscape of Utah, visited it’s canyons, rivers, plateaus and rock formations. But never for as long as I will when leading Quest. So today I begin the great “count down” for departure. In planning the trip I referred to the Utah Gazeteer, map book extraordinaire. But the scale of the plateau of southeastern Utah is immense and leaves me with only a fragmented sense of this expanse of landscape. I wanted a map that would guide me across this place that I could look at whole. I chose a map to order sight unseen, yet thinking it would reveal the mystery as a whole . Today as I review the readings the program participants and I will read encamped on some mystical spot of sandstone I unfold the map. Ha! The map covers the southern edge of the area in question. But the northern portion if the area I am interested to study is not to be found . Looking back to the map guide selection , you know the little overlapping boxes that denote which map covers what area, I realize the map I want does not exist! Maps ring the area in question , but not the place. And that is the magic of the upcoming journey. Seeing, feeling, touching, smelling for ourselves that power of a landscape we do not know from reading a map or previous experience. Soon the days will be of this journey, dust trailing behind us as we get to know the mystery.

Forms of Adventure

I am thinking about Adventure. The idea of adventure has long been a preoccupation of mine. I have always thought about adventure from a gender neutral perspective. In this particular context I am thinking about the adventure that comes from engaging with the “elements”, that most obvious experience. Trekking across mountains, surfing some great wave in the Pacific, sky diving, skiing back mountain trails, moon walking, sailing around the world. You get the idea….

And it seems that we are inventing new forms of adventure more rapidly today, than in the past. Not that these experiences didn’t exist before, but that they were integrated into other activities. Now they are being experienced as isolated activities: rock climbing and ice climbing, for instance. And maybe these new adventures are no different than the singularity of skydiving, which grew out of the need to save a life if a plane or “flying machine” was set on a course of destruction. We are exchanging passive sports for active ones these days. There is a reason that golf courses are being shut down across the a United States. We are off finding our own adventures.

This is where my query lies. As I think about adventure, the adventure that is followed in journalism, on TV and Internet, I think about these being particularly “male” adventures. Now before you get upset, I am not speaking of adventures that women cannot equally participate in, I am thinking about what defines the epitome of the “womens” adventure? And which of today’s “adventure” experiences may have been first engaged by a women?

So, help me out. Let me know what you know. What you think about women and adventure. Keep in mind, this is not a challenge of who is better or equal at some activity. I am truly interested in what “is”, what defines the ultimate women’s sense of adventure.
