Beginning Practice

20141026-073324.jpg

What do you do when you have more ideas than you have days of a life ?

Remember your mission. How does anyone, any successful creator measure their decision to go forward with an idea? They return to their mission for measure. Of all the ideas, of all the potential, the one to pursuit is the one that best propels your mission forward.

Know your mission in life . Know why you do what you do, set course and take off.

From here begins practice.

Practice is Progress

design practice, by hand

design practice, by hand

That’s right, designing “old-school” style. No computer. No immediate gratification. But work. Lead to paper. Is this progress? For those of us who still believe that there is a necessary connection between hand and head as it relates to knowing and thinking, this is design process, and progress. One and the same.

Does that mean that I don’t believe in computers? Well, I’m typing on one right now. What it means is that it is critical for us to know what is the correct tool for the work at hand. And there is the “hand” again, tied to work. Use your hands folks, don’t go into auto pilot when you work with that 3-d modeling program. Engage with yourself and the world. Feel it through the work, that makes the work a practice.

More design work on the new studio that we will break ground on in the next few months…

Turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks!

My first piece of fused glass.

All part of the practice.

drawing from life

Its Friday, and the weather is changing. From 90 degrees yesterday and full of sun, to blustery Fall.  By tomorrow most of the yellow and red left on trees will be bare. Tomorrow will be full of rain and wind. And here is where practice splits in time. To draw on the guest house I am designing (which is its own sort of reward) or to take a hike….

a practice of making

a practice of making

What we know, we can practice. We know ways of being, we practice these. These practices add up to a life, lived. We learn, believe and live differently. We practice our differences, and if we practice diligently there is a unique presence that comes to live on the Earth for a while. Practice has success, failure, sharing, love, making and challenge all wrapped up in time. We transform as we practice, as we move through the world every day. These posts found under “PRACTICE” are shared thoughts about practicing, and moments of my practice.

Let us all be brave to find the best way for each of us to Practice, to create a life that is full of moments of who we are.

Hands

making the world

making the world

A friend of mine recently asked if I indeed use my hands to paint and if so, why. I have given this fact , that I use my hands to paint, some thought and can simply say that using my hands is more direct and sensual than a brush. Perhaps it’s my lack of being able to control the brush to move paint around . Lack of practice. Lack of patience . But then if I get the visual results I seek with the use of my hands why not simply use my hands (and fingers)? I have always used my hands and fingers to manipulate two-dimensional medium. The work feels more real to me this way. I believe I am more directly involved in the creation of the work because I can feel the materials that make the work. As in molding clay, or folding paper. Pencil over the computer perhaps. I also appreciate the remnants and presence of what makes the work. Fingerprints and drags of knuckles across paint. Rather than seek to create work that hides its production method I like the connectivity between what is made and what results. For instance, the spoke shave or chisel for wood work over a highly sanded piece of smooth wood where all obvious marks of hand disappear except the obvious smoothness that results.

I do not reject the paint brush or any other tools that assist the creation of work. But I seek to retain the active memory of our presence when creating art. Sharing ourselves with the rest of humanity.
